Gowanus by Design is pleased to announce the winners of our second design competition. A note about the selection process: GbD is invested in developing appropriate urban planning solutions that address an extraordinarily complex issue. During the jury review, it was agreed that even though there were many evocative submissions, no single entry fully addressed the myriad and difficult challenges presented by the competition brief. Therefore, rather than awarding first place, second place, and a handful of honorable mention winners, it was decided that there should be three winners in three categories: Urban Ecology, Architectural Design, and Community Programming.

Gowanus by Design would like to thank all the participants in the Water_Works Competition. We received entries from individuals and teams, comprised of students and professionals from over 20 countries. These entries share GbD’s aspiration to bring the same analytical and research tools we use for our professional clients, to benefit our community and our neighbors. To view the winners, please visit the Water_Works competition page. These and other selected entries will be exhibited in the spring at a location near the Gowanus Canal. Please check back for details on the Exhibition date and location.

Gowanus by Design would also like to thank the members of the competition jury: Richard Plunz, David J. Lewis, Robert M. Rogers, Andrew Simons and Joel Towers. Without their time and dedication to critical urban design and architecture none of this would have been possible.
